No, no, no! Reuben had promised to bring Jeremiah home boasting of victory. It couldn’t be her shepherd in the cart. She pressed her palm to her lips to quiet a bellow. Scalp to toes, she trembled, but she stumbled forward. She had to glimpse who had fallen. Was this the last time she would behold her shepherd’s handsome face? If he was injured, she would take care of him, day and night.

Reuben blocked her path, his eyes downcast.

Dodging his frame, she halted at the side of the cart and glimpsed a body. One she knew well from its height and muscle.

“No!” she screamed.

Lamech moved closer to her, but Keenan stood his ground, not moving from the front of the cart. Shouldn’t a brother mourn more than companions?

She knew the laws on cleanliness. She knew she would be unclean for touching a dead body, but she could not let her shepherd go, not without one last embrace. Could he sense her tears? Did he know how much she cared? Would he ever know?

Scrambling into the cart, she removed the covering over Jeremiah’s face.

Her stomach surged. She swallowed the burn of bile. Curse you men of Ai. She cradled Jeremiah’s swollen face in her hands and ignored the scent of butchered meat. Blood wet her fingertips. Her shepherd’s head was bigger, odd-shaped, and caked with blood. His left eye was but a slit from the bulge in his skull.

“Noah.” Reuben’s voice was close. His words hurried. Of course, it was. He was an elder’s son, and she was touching a man who wasn’t her husband.

Reuben reached for her, his eyes full of compassion.

She flinched, but she did not release her hold on Jeremiah. Her knees scraped against the wooden cart bed.

“He’s not dead.” Reuben’s words rushed forth.

Her mouth gaped. “What?” She eased a hand under his nose and sure enough a small puff of breath bathed her skin. “He was covered.” Her bones could have burst forth in dance. “Praise God. He’s alive.”

“He was struck by a club while fighting to save us. I’ve never seen a man so strong.” Reuben nodded to Lamech and then to her. “Come out of the cart.”

Jeremiah’s body jerked to the side. His head rolled backward as spasms shook his torso.

“What is happening?” Noah held firm to Jeremiah. He did not need to lose any more blood.

“We don’t know.” Reuben grasped Jeremiah’s legs. “He has done this before.”

Some passersby gawked at Jeremiah’s contorted body.

Others traipsed by ignoring the spectacle.

“Jeremiah it’s me. It’s Noah. You came back to me as I asked.”

The violent shaking continued. Her clansmen did their best to constrain Jeremiah’s flailing.

“You’re home Jeremiah. It’s time to sleep.” He could not hear her, but she spoke on and on, hoping for his body to quiet. She touched her cheek to his face. He did not blaze with fever. Toda raba, Adonai.

Jeremiah’s eyelids stayed shut, but his body obeyed her command. His limbs fell silent.

God, comfort Your servant.

Relaxing her arms, she shifted away from her shepherd.
